Eifion Huws

Eifion Huws Eifion Huws farms at Penrhos, Bodedern, a dairy farm with a 140 pedigree Ayrshire herd. The dairy herd has an outstanding production and show record, and Eifion is a long established and highly respected Ayrshire cattle judge.

He has been an active Member of the Union's central Finance and Organisation Committee for the past seven years, and was Chairman of the Union's Milk and Dairy Produce Committee from 2004 - 2011. Eifion also represents the FUW on the national Dairy UK Farmers' Forum.

Eifion travels the length and breadth of the country, and over to Europe, representing the dairy industry in the hope of acquiring better conditions and prices for farmers. Such work includes representing the FUW during recent face-to-face discussions with milk processors and representation in Brussels.

Over the years, he has become well known in the media for his outspoken views on matters concerning the dairy industry and, of late, on the European Dairy Package, the Dairy Code of Practice and the establishment of Producer organisations in Wales.

Last June Mr Huws was awarded the 2011/2012 FUW internal award for services to the union and the agricultural industry in Wales. Last October he was selected as the winner of the FUW/HSBC Bank award for outstanding contribution to the Welsh dairy industry.

His other interests include the local YFC at Bodedern, at which he has held most posts, including President and Club Leader. Eifion is particularly concerned about the future of
Wales' young people and their struggle to obtain employment, housing and capital, to farm in
their local areas, and he practices what he preaches by encouraging his son, Iwan, who is now
a partner in the family business, to stay at home to farm.

One of his biggest concerns is that agriculture cannot make a sustainable profit, and it is
therefore very difficult to entice farmers' sons and daughters to stay in their family homes.

Eifion has represented his local Branch of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales for
many years, and has been Chairman of the Ynys Môn Committee of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution for the past eleven years.

He is also a strong believer in Glyngwyn Roberts' philosophy that there should be a
maximum period for members on the F & O Committee. Eifion's wealth of knowledge within the industry is second to none. His energy, enthusiasm and passion for the dairy industry knows no bounds and his renowned ability to support his fellow farmers is priceless.
