The Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) and NFU Cymru hosted a joint meeting at the Plaid Cymru Conference in Swansea focusing on the future of Welsh farming. Greeting politicians, candidates and party members the unions relayed their calls for stability, fair funding, and a strong voice for rural Wales in the next Senedd.
Opened by Plaid Cymru’s Rural Affairs Spokesperson, Llŷr Gruffydd MS, the joint fringe event saw FUW President, Ian Rickman, and NFU Cymru President Aled Jones present their key priorities for the next Senedd and Welsh Government, highlighting seven shared ambitions that form the foundation of their respective manifestos.
“Climate change is a threat we live with on a daily basis,” shared Jenipher Sambazi, a coffee farmer in Uganda and face of the Welsh coffee brand ‘Jenipher’s Coffi’ while meeting Teleri Fielden, who farms in the Snowdonia National Park in north Wales.
Teleri, who also works as a Policy Officer for the Farmers’ Union of Wales shared, "As two farmers from mountainous areas, despite producing very different products, we face many common challenges - and there’s a lot that we can learn from one another. Unpredictable incomes and changing weather, including new and more severe threats of pests are shared challenges for farmers from Wales to Uganda.”
The Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) Montgomeryshire has celebrated a successful Tractor Run, which took place on Sunday, 5th October 2025, raising over £1,000 to be shared between Prostate Cymru and the local FUW branch.
More than 20 tractors and many 4x4 vehicles took part in the event, setting off from Llwynybrain, Adfa for a scenic route through Montgomeryshire’s countryside before returning for a barbecue, kindly hosted by the Yeomans family.
The Welsh Government has today published the evidence base that underpins the introduction of the Sustainable Farming Scheme, including the Business Case, Integrated Impact Assessment and an updated economic analysis.
These documents consider the potential economic, environmental and social outcomes of the Scheme. Through the work of the Ministerial Roundtable, some of the initial findings helped to inform the final details and indicative payment rates of the Scheme.
