News in Brief July 2023

Global livestock production to grow over the next decade

Global production of livestock is expected to expand by 1.3% each year for the next decade, a report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nation (FAO) has found.

The projected growth through to 2032 is slower than seen in the recent past and around half of the growth is expected to be from poultry meat.

Greenhouse gas emissions are expected to increase by half the projected output growth indicating a significant fall in the carbon intensity of agricultural production.

UK food security threatened by lack of government support

A new report from the Institute of Public Policy Support has said food security in the UK is being undermined by government failure to meaningfully address climate and nature crises and support UK farmers.

The report outlines how the changing climate is having an impact on livestock and crops and is affecting food production in the UK.

The report’s analysis also shows that trade deals agreed since Brexit are undercutting farmers and climate goals and effectively exporting the UK’s carbon footprint to other parts of the world.

New Zealand sign EU free trade agreement

New Zealand expects to see a boost in exports of $1.8 billion (£870 million) per year by 2035 following the signing of a free trade agreement with the EU in July.

The agreement will see savings in tariffs of $100 million from day one, however tariffs remain on many meat and dairy products with improved export access.

It is expected that red meat and dairy will get up to $120m worth of new annual export revenue, estimated to reach $600 million by 2030. Quotas have been established for butter, cheese, milk powders and protein whey.
