Since 17th October the use of both snares and glue traps have become illegal in Wales. This is the first ban of its kind in the UK. The ban comes into force under the Agriculture (Wales) Act.
The ban on the use of snares is a Programme for Government commitment. The UK Government has legislated for only a partial ban in England.
The Agriculture (Wales) Act 2023 includes provisions to amend the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 making the use of glue traps an offence. The Wildlife and Countryside Act is enforced by police forces across Wales and since 17th October, any person found guilty of using a glue trap could face imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
