Energy Bills Discount Scheme

The Energy Bills Discount Scheme will run for 12 months from 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024.

This scheme replaces the Energy Bill Relief Scheme which supported businesses and organisations between 1 October 2022 and 31 March 2023.

The baseline discount will provide some support with energy bills for eligible non-domestic customers in Great Britain and Northern Ireland – this support will be applied automatically.

Nematodirus Forecast service

APHA is assisting the Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) with the production of a Nematodirus Forecast service.

Nematodirosis is a particularly nasty disease in lambs, causing a high number of mortalities and stunting the growth of many others. It is caused by the Nematodirus battus worm, which has a different lifecycle to other sheep worms. Under certain climatic conditions it can strike very quickly, with little or no warning.

The SCOPS Nematodirus Forecast has been active since late February. The forecast map is updated daily, using data from 140 weather stations (provided by the Met Office), tracking changes in risk throughout the spring and early summer.

Farming Connect Evaluation Workshops

The Welsh Government has commissioned Miller Research to carry out an independent external evaluation of Farming Connect and are keen to hear the views of those that have received support from Farming Connect between 2014 and 2022.

They are looking for farmers to take part in a 1-hour online workshop to gather feedback on Farming Connect to help shape the service for the future.

The workshops will be held on the following dates between 7 and 8pm:

FUW says Windsor Framework should pave way for further concessions that help GB businesses

The FUW, whilst welcoming the deal reached with the EU to ease friction at the GB-NI border, is demanding that this should pave the way for further agreements with the EU that would benefit businesses in the rest of Great Britain - including farmers.

The Windsor Framework, agreed in principle by the UK and EU, will significantly reduce barriers for goods entering Northern Ireland which are not destined for the Republic of Ireland or other parts of the EU. This will be achieved through the introduction of ‘green lanes’ for such products.

This deal is good for Northern Ireland and those exporting to Northern Ireland from Great Britain. The fact that the deal also reduces the risk of a trade war with the EU that would have been devastating for agriculture is also very welcome.

However the benefits for Welsh farmers are negligible on the whole - notwithstanding some relatively niche exporters to Northern Ireland, for which this is good news.

The population of Northern Ireland is 1.9 million, compared with an EU population of 447 million, and the barriers to our trade with the EU will remain the same if the Government secures this new agreement.

As such, while the FUW very much welcomes and commends the progress made by the Prime Minister and the EU with this return by the UK to diplomatic norms and working with its neighbours, the FUW believes this deal needs to pave the way to further agreements that remove barriers for our exports as Welsh farmers to the EU.

The EU is the UK’s largest trading partner with UK exports to the EU worth £267 billion in 2021. However, trade between the UK and EU has been extremely volatile since the UK left the single market, while the UK's trade deficit with the EU has recently hit the highest level since records began in 1997 due to a rise in imports from the EU.

The paperwork that existed for trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland has been removed by the Windsor Framework but the very same paperwork continues to add costs and complexity to UK trade with the EU.

Whilst the FUW is fully supportive of the Windsor Framework, the same pragmatic approach to the rest of UK trade with the EU is needed. This agreement provides a solid foundation for further talks to this end.

FUW welcomes the announcement of £17 million Pembrokeshire Creamery Ltd investment

The Farmers’ Union of Wales has wholeheartedly welcomed the announcement of a £17 million investment to develop a new milk processing facility in Pembrokeshire and the creation of 80 new jobs over the coming years in south west Wales.

Pembrokeshire Creamery Ltd will source its milk from local family farms to fulfil the 70 million litre capacity of the new processing facility, delivering a boost to local dairy supply chains and the wider economy.

The success of this investment is pivotal to the success of the dairy farming sector in south west Wales. The Welsh Government has previously invested £2 million into the Pembrokeshire Food Park site near Haverfordwest and this additional investment by Pembrokeshire Creamery Ltd demonstrates the benefits of creating sustainable and short supply chains for consumers in Wales.
