FUW Denbigh AGM a success

The Denbigh branch of the Farmers’ Union of Wales held its Annual General Meeting to discuss farming matters on Monday 13 November.

The event was held at Llysfasi college and welcomed Hybu Cig Cymru Industry Development Manager John Richards, Coleg Cambria Llysfasi Farm Manager Dewi Jones and Dunn & Ellis Accountants Director Sion  Roberts, as keynote speakers.

FUW Denbigh and Flint CEO Mari Dafydd Jones said: “I would like to thank our speakers for the informative presentations they gave and of course our members who supported the evening. A special thank you also to Dunn & Ellis Accountants for sponsoring the evening and to Llysfasi for hosting the event.

“We discussed a variety of topics on the night such as the challenges facing the industry post-Brexit and the potential labour shortage our slaughterhouses will face. Members expressed their concern that not enough is being done for our home market and that more of an effort needs to be made in promoting the cheaper cuts of lamb.

“If local children are growing up not eating lamb due to the parents not being able to afford it or not having time to cook it, then we need to focus on that market and educate them on the cheaper cuts of meat and inspire them with quick, delicious recipes.”

Members further heard about the structure and day to day running of Coleg Cambria and Dewi Jones, Llysfasi Farm Manager, talked about upcoming projects at Llysfasi Farm, such as the new drone which is one of their recent purchases.

“The presentation by Sion Roberts, Director of Dunn & Ellis accountants, certainly gave the members something to think about as he talked about inheritance tax, farm diversification, the benefits of becoming a limited company over a partnership and what you need to understand before making the decision to change,” added Mari Dafydd Jones.
