Licence change for moves to an AFU

To date owners of TB restricted herds have had to apply to APHA for a specific cattle movement licence each time they wanted to sell cattle to an Approved Finishing Unit (AFU), either directly or via an Approved TB Dedicated Sale for TB-restricted cattle (an ‘orange market’). The time needed to complete that process could sometimes make it difficult for keepers to meet the demands of cattle purchasers.

Avian Influenza costs survey

A survey is being conducted by Fera Science Ltd and DEFRA to identify the financial impacts incurred by UK bird holders as a result of the avian influenza outbreak between October 2021 and September 2022.

Asulam not available for bracken control for 2024

The manufacturers of Asulox (active ingredient Asulam), UPL ltd, have announced they will withdraw from carrying out further work on a permanent solution that would support the use of Asulam in the future.

FUW alarmed that the experiences of just one farm are being heralded as the mechanism by which to eradicate bovine TB

Earlier this month, the FUW joined a variety of farmers, veterinary professionals and academics at a lecture by staunch anti-cull campaigner Sir Brian May on alternative bovine TB control methods. 

The lecture, which was hosted by the Ser Cymru Centre of Excellence for Bovine Tuberculosis at Aberystwyth University, outlined a long-term bovine TB project undertaken on a farm sponsored by Brian May in South Devon.
