FUW hosts all Wales mental health conference

On the eve of World Mental Health day (Friday, October 9), the FUW hosted a virtual All Wales Mental Health conference, which explored the wider context of poor mental health in rural communities and what steps need to be taken by Governments, decision makers and policy shapers to address the situation, especially as Covid-19 is likely to put further pressure on people’s mental health and finances.

The event was also supported by Welsh Government’s Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs,Lesley Griffiths, and New Zealand farmer and mental health champion Doug Avery through video messages.

Following the Conference, the FUW has written to the Minister for Mental Health, Wellbeing and Welsh Language, Eluned Morgan, to outline some of the key points which were raised during the conference.

Sale of majority stake in ASDA brings opportunity for British produce

The Lancashire based billionaire Issa brothers who own the petrol station ‘European Garages’ (EG) Group and private equity firm TDR Capital have secured the £6.8 billion majority stake in major UK retailer ASDA.

The original proposal in 2019 for ASDA to merge with Sainsbury’s was kicked into the long grass by the UK’s competition regulator due to competition rules and the potential for prices to rise and product quality to decline.

DPJ Foundation offer free mental health awareness training

The DPJ Foundation has set up new free Mental Health Awareness Training sessions to be delivered on-line throughout November. The training is fully funded by the Coronavirus Mental Health Response Fund: Wales as part of a programme that aims to help Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations to continue to provide mental health services during this pandemic.

The training is for anyone who works/lives in the agricultural sector or works directly with farmers in Wales. It will appeal to farmers, farmers’ partners and those in farm facing roles such as vets, feed reps, tanker drivers, salesmen and women and animal welfare inspectors. Participants will receive a resource pack after the training to help them put the training into practice.

The training will cover:

Express an interest for funding towards controlling antimicrobial resistance

The Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths has allocated £4 million of the Rural Development Programme (RDP) budget towards controlling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals and the environment.

The expression of interest window opened on 5th October and will close on 16th November 2020. See here for more information and to express an interest.

Welsh Government’s approach to AMR is to adopt the principle of prevention rather than cure and applications for this funding must demonstrate how they will contribute to the objectives set out in the Five Year Implementation Plan.

This announcement coincides with the first annual review on the work of the Animal and Environment AMR Delivery Group.

Time is of the essence when faced with a notice to quit

Tenant farmers are being warned to act quickly if they receive a Notice to Quit from their landlords.

The alert comes from Eifion Bibby of Davis Meade Property Consultants who has been advising FUW members who have received such communications.

It is essential that tenants take advice immediately upon receiving a notice to quit as there will be a limited time - sometimes, for instance, just a month - to take action, such as by serving a counter notice, where appropriate.

There have been circumstances arising where tenants have unnecessarily lost their tenanted rights by not acting rapidly.
