FUW members visit cutting edge dairy nutrition business

Members of the Farmers’ Union of Wales enjoyed a visit to cutting edge dairy nutrition business Volac in West Wales, on the eve of the Welsh Dairy show (Monday 23 October).

Volac is one of Europe’s fastest growing and ambitious international dairy nutrition businesses, which was established in the 1970s and in 1989 acquired their milk processing site at Felinfach, Ceredigion.

Since then more than £1 million a year has been invested in the factory, including installation of the latest ultra-filtration and micro-filtration equipment.

Today, Felinfach is producing high quality milk based products for the feed and food markets from their extensive manufacturing facilities.

Felinfach produces milk replacer products for calves, lambs and piglets, with around half sold to UK farms and the remainder exported to Europe and beyond.

For the food markets, Felinfach produces whey protein isolates and concentrates, for sale to market sectors such as active nutrition, weight management and senior nutrition.

Dai Miles, the FUW’s Milk and Dairy Produce Committee chairman, said: “I would like to thank the staff at Volac Felinfach for showing us around the premises and explaining the production processes. It was certainly interesting to see how this state of the art business operates.”
