New Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) legislation introduced on the 1st July

On the 1st of July 2024 the Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) (Wales) Order 2024 was introduced in order to eradicate BVD from the Welsh cattle herd. 

BVD is a viral infection of cattle causes a variety of health issues such as:

Sheep Inventory Changes

The way in which the Sheep Annual Inventory is run in Wales will be changing. To bring the annual inventory in line with other UK nations, the date of the inventory will now be 1 December. The information required will remain the same.

There are two significant changes:

Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) Data Confirmation 2024

Welsh Government has announced a data confirmation exercise, as part of the SFS Preparatory Phase. 

The aim of the data confirmation exercise is to update RPW mapping systems with the correct habitat areas and tree canopy cover on all farms in advance of the SFS design being finalised and the introduction of SFS in 2026.

FUW call on the incoming UK Government to ensure a level playing field between UK and EU producers

Since the UK officially left the European Union (EU), there was, initially, a political appetite in Westminster to hastily sign free trade agreements and reveal the ‘benefits’ of our post-Brexit trading arrangements.

The Farmers’ Union of Wales have clearly voiced concerns in regards to the free trade agreements with Australia and New Zealand, not least given the Australian deal is of negligible value to the UK economy as a whole.
