New veg garden for city kids, thanks to Pembrokeshire farmers

Farmers from Pembrokeshire have raised money to help city kids build a new vegetable garden at Farms for City Children, at Lower Treginnis, St David’s.

The money (£502.67) was raised through a variety of activities including a raffle and donations at the Farmers’ Union of Wales stand at the 2017 Pembrokeshire County Show and a pre-Christmas bingo.

FUW Pembrokeshire CEO Rebecca Voyle said: “ I am really pleased that the money we have raised will be put towards the re-developments which they have planned for their vegetable garden in 2018 including new polytunnels and seed beds. For the children who come here for a week with their schools it is an intense, ‘learning through doing’ experience of a different life. Many children may not know where their food comes from and have limited opportunities to explore the outside world, so a new vegetable garden to help them understand how their food is produced is definitely worth supporting.”

Children’s author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare founded Farms for City Children (FFCC) at Nethercott House in Devon in 1976 to offer urban children from all over the country a unique opportunity to live and work together for a week at a time on a real farm in the heart of the countryside.

Welsh Family Farms deliver Wellbeing Goals

Assembly Members and key stakeholders, who joined the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) at its annual farmhouse breakfast in Cardiff (Tuesday, January 23) heard how the Union has established three working groups to demonstrate the positive impact that the farming sector has on delivering the goals of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act.

Speaking at the breakfast, FUW President Glyn Roberts said: “Those of you familiar with the FUW will know that we pride ourselves on being a grassroots organisation which provides a voice for Welsh farmers, and Welsh farmers alone. We also like to think that we are an organisation that makes maximum use of data and analysis. Evidenced based decision making as it’s known.

“Therefore I am pleased to announce today that in line with these principles we have established three focus groups which will look at identifying strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for our key sectors based on the detailed annual breakdowns of farm costs and outputs provided by Aberystwyth University’s Farm Business Survey.”

Denbighshire farmers invite you for breakfast

The FUW's farmhouse breakfast was a great success
with families in Denbighshire last year.

Farmers from Denbighshire are inviting you to join them for breakfast, as part of the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) breakfast campaign, which aims to promote the quality premium local produce that farmers grow for us every day of the year.

The FUW’s Denbigh branch has arranged a breakfast on Saturday, January 27 at Llansannan  Village Hall, which will start at 8am.
Mari Dafydd Jones, the FUW’s Denbigh and Flint CEO, said: “I would like to invite you all to join us for breakfast at Llansannan Village hall. There really is no better place for bonding people together and sharing ideas than over good food and that’s exactly what we intend to do with these breakfast functions.

“We want you to be a part of what we do, and share your thoughts and worries about the state of the industry, tell us your stories and help us to understand how we can help each other, so why not give us a call in the office and book your seat at our table?”

Those wishing to attend the breakfast functions need to contact the Rhuthun office on 01824 707198.
