Farming leaders welcome latest Brexit Bill

Farming leaders have welcomed last night’s Bill in Parliament which, if approved by the Lords, will enshrine in law that the UK must ask EU leaders for a long extension if Theresa May fails to get her deal through parliament by April 12 - effectively ruling out a no-deal Brexit.

The Farmers’ Union of Wales has been pushing its ‘Revoke to Restart’ policy since the beginning of the year, calling on the Government to revoke Article 50, enabling more time for the UK to take back control of the Brexit process.

“Any measure which enables us to leave the EU in a smooth and orderly manner is to be welcomed,” said FUW President Glyn Roberts.

Mr Roberts reiterated the FUW’s long held view that leaving the EU, while staying in the Single Market and Customs Union, remained the best way to bridge the political divide which had come from the EU referendum.

The bill, tabled by Labour MP Yvette Cooper passed dramatically late last night by a majority of one in the House of Commons.
